Chapter 2

In those days (end of 80's- early 90's) there were some ROCK & Jazz club in Kyoto,
"circus & circus", "Taku Taku", "Jittoku", "Big Bang", "Vivre hall"...

"Jittoku"
http://www2.odn.ne.jp/jittoku/index.htm

"Taku Taku"
http://www.geisya.or.jp/ ‾takutaku/

Both of clubs buildings are Japanese old traditional storehouse.
Especially, lots of foreign bands appeared at "Taku Taku".

In Osaka, "Bourbon House", "Banana hall", "Bahama", "Yanta Rokumeikan" etc....

In Kobe, "Chicken George"
http://www.chicken-george.co.jp/

My (various) bands played at most of those clubs in those days.

Btw, after "Razor" had broke, I was looking for new band.
I heard a singer and a bassist looked for a drummer and a guitarist.
So we listened to our tapes each other and we decided to play together soon.
The band name was "Reg-Wink". I don't know the meaning of the band name still now.
( I couldn't like that band name till last).
Anyway, "Reg Wink" went well very much....
We found a good guitarist soon, and played at some clubs.
The studio recommended us sending our tape to the big record company CBS/SONY's Girls Rock Contest.
The band including a girl could send a tape to that contest.
As I wrote, there were lots of girls bands and so on in Japan.
Our tape was accepted soon, Reg-Wink could play at that contest in the west of Japan.
So We won the championship of the west of Japan.
(Japan has big 4 parts. East, West, Kyusyu and Tohoku-Hokkaido )
I was very surprised at that....

Then....we went to Tokyo and played at the final contest.
So high level....because the bands that were selected from all over Japan played at that contest...
The contest guaranteed the major debut from CBS/SONY for a final winner.

However....We "Reg-Wink" won the final championship !!!!!!
OMG.....so we went for a trip in Los Angels as one of the prizes and visited to CBS/SONY LA. (Then, a director asked us "What band do you like?" I answered "Stryper !! " then...the person frowned  )

Anyway....the record company prepared for various plans to us...
But I already didn't want to play with our singer anymore.
We had some problems...Actually I hated her very much.
because......Once, she brought some good songs.
She said she wrote those songs.
We liked those very much and played and recorded.
But....soon we knew those songs were written by her boyfriend.
Other members didn't mind that so much, but I hated such thing.

Why do we girls play ROCK?
For me, Girls ROCK is ROCK that girls create and play music without boys.
I don't need the girl who cannot act and create music without boys.
I am not interested in such girl at all.

And I also could not trust our director at all.
Because he didn't understand our music at all.

So....Though I was a leader of the band, I decided to go out the band.

In those days, The relation of me and my family were terrible.
I couldn't live with them because they hated me to play ROCK.
I always stayed in my friends room from place to place....
I couldn't go to hospital because I didn't have even my health insurance card.

When We won the final championship, I called my mother after long time.
But she hung up silently soon.

The persons of record company visited my home and asked to me not to stop the band.
(Then I returned to my home after long time. My mother allowed that because the record company was CBS/SONY!!)

What do you think what she said?
" Continue the band!! You should do that! Because CBS/SONY!!! "

FUCK OFF

I said to them " I do NOT continue Reg-Wink. I do NOT want to do. "

I may have been childish (Actually very young era).
But I don't regret that.

Anyway, I lost my band again....and I had to leave my home again.
( Reg-Wink released a few album without me, they seemed not to go well. )

to be continued.....

Great story again. You really came quite close to the top with that band. Winning all thoses contests. At one time you probably were the top girl band in Japan, if I read that right. That's awesome!!! I'm wondering if you have any of the songs you recorded with your band, and if you do, if you could share them with us. You seem to have a very cool musical life.

In those days, there were already Princess Princess and SHOW-YA.
SHOW-YA was so so good band, especially drummer was awesome.
But Princess Princess was made by the record company (CBS/SONY  )
That is shit.
Of course Princess Princess's singer is good singer and song writer I think.
But they were different from us at the meaning of the being.

We Reg-Wink appeared in National broadcasting with Princess Princess and Pearl. (Pearl was the band had a female singer and drummer)
We and Pearl played in front of TV camera.
But Princess Princess did....you know.
They couldn't play their instrutments well....

Anyway, I don't think my music life was great at all....terrible story. haha
Maybe I was too pure and childish for living in Japanese music business world. Because I failed so much.

So unfortunately I don't have most of my music now.
Though there are some my favorite tapes, I cannot make mp3 from those.
( and I hate my music released as CD now. except a few.)

But next story will be a little interesting......hehe
Because X will appear in my story.

Ah, Princess Princess is a prefabricated band  Formula band. Those are only an appearance, and nothing more. Sooner or later those will fade away.

Well, if you ask me you atleast had the guts, and heart, and soul to get up after all the times you fell down, and you left your most succesful, because they went against the original idea of the band. They sold out if you ask me. If the idea was to have your own written songs, and then you record songs from someone else...that makes no sence. You did the right thing. When they make a documentary about girl bands in Japan, they will come to you, and you can tell the truth of what happened. You never know ;) You have a lot of experience. That's always a good thing. I'm sure you've learned a lot about many different things. You did well in my eyes, specially when you left the band. You stayed true. They sold out, and then they failed. See, they failed cause they sold out, and because they needed you ;)

Ooooooh, the might X will make an appearance. Are you sure can talk about them right now???

But unfortunately Japanese's ears seem not to be good so much.
And I can't write that they couldn't play their instruments in those days in Japanese. (They are famous in Japan still now)
Fortunately most of Japanese cannot read English at all...
So I can write a little unknown stories here, hehe.

Thank you for understanding.
To be pure for something too much brings to the person troubles sometimes,
But I cannot live without such pureness.
I always wanna be pure and honest person for myself till I die.

Chapter 3

Not getting back to the subject...

I explain the situation of club scene of the west of Japan in those days a little.

When I lived in Kyoto's home, my some bands played with X-RAY, Rajas and more.
In those days, there were lots of the orthodox metal bands in our area.
Earth Shaker, MARINO, Snake Charmer, OIL...etc...
And progressive rock bands, NOVELA, gothic metal band, Dead End....
a little aggressive Metal band, D'erlanger.....

Earth Shaker, 44 Magnum and Loudness was already famous among Japanese metal fans.
And X-RAY, Rajas, Marino, too.
I remember Anthem came to play in Kyoto and Osaka from Tokyo.
Because Metal was popular in the west more than in the east of Japan.

Population and power of Metal, Punk, and Yankee were competed
In kyoto and Osaka.

Metal musicians were generally gentle. (Punks and Yankee used to attack them  But The fight of Punks vs Yankee was most aggressive  )
Anyway, the situation of Kyoto's music scene changed steadily in a few years.

Half punk and half metal, half yankee and half metal.
Such bands appeared in Kyoto and Osaka.

Kamaitachi of Kyoto.
COLOR of Osaka.

Both of them were 1/3 metal, 1/3 punk, 1/3 yankee.
Some of them were really ex-bousouzoku (motorcycle gang).

Especially, there were lots of such bands in Osaka.
Their leader band was COLOR.

I made friends with Kamaitachi because my hometown is Kyoto.
And Kamaitachi's some members formed the band "Decameron" and "Genkaku Allergy"...etc later.

I played (not music, merely play) with Kamaitachi's member sometimes.
They were a little (not a little...hehe) aggressive...They caused various problems and all clubs of the west shut them out.
Only "Vintage Bar" (Japanese mafia's son and daughter managed) accepted them.
Because Kamaitachi couldn't set fire and destroy it.
Anyway, they always had to go to Tokyo for their gig.

You can see what kind of bands Kamaitachi were at that time.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=m1TmkHnXTZQ

And you can see "BOUSOUZOKU=Japanese motorcycle gang" in this video.

But Dynamite Tommy of COLOR had power more than Kamaitachi.
So COLOR seemed to be Kamaitachi's elder brother band.
Dynamite Tommy had an independent rabel " Free-Will".
Later Kenzi of Kamaitachi assumed the position of the president of "Free-Will" for a certain period of time.

Nobody thought "Free-Will" could survive in Japanese music scene in those days. (Now, Dynamite Tommy is CEO of "Free-Will" has Dir en grey, Kagero and miyavi)

Anyway, It returns to the subject.
My friends, some orthodox metal bands disliked that I made friends with such aggressive bands.
So....when I quit Reg-Wink, most of my friends in Kyoto changed their attitude to me.
Some studios, record shops and musical instrument shops, clubs in Kyoto....
I felt they changed their attitude to me at all....

Then I thought they think I am the fool because I quit such good band Reg-Wink.

But.....HIDE of X told me the reason later....
(Of course he didn't know how I was treated in Kyoto.
He merely told me concerning one article about me.)

However I had not met X yet in those days.
Because I played drums in some bands in west area for a while after I quit Reg-Wink.

Yeah....This is the first time that I write about my band era...
It is difficult to write this in Japanese because there are some reasons.
So....I am enjoying to write this story a little now...

The next or the next next will be last chapter...
While I write this, I recall various things.
So....It will become long a little...

That's quite an interesting thing that was going with all those bands. Some of them must have really hated each other only for being a different type of band. Cool that Hide makes an entrance now  My brother has two Earthshaker records, cause he likes Loudness aswell. Good stuff.

Such amazing stories you've got, hitomi! Really interesting to read.
What if they could teach us history like this [music history] in school, that would be really cool... 8-)

And as WaspGirl said, this might be good therapy for you. :)
